Exploring Aspect Ratios

As part of our focus on Film-Making, Room 25 has been looking at "Aspect Ratios".

An Aspect Ratio describes the relationship between the width and height of a display screen, such as a TV, or computer monitor or screen.

When filming, or creating animations, it can be helpful to know how the creation is going to be played so it will be the best fit the screen. Here we have examples (created on Piskel) of three aspect ratios that we found on our class TV settings. It turns out that the best fit for our TV is 16:9.

What does 16:9 mean? It is a relationship... so if the screen width was 16cm, the height would be 9cm. Or, it could be 16x2 : 9x2, or 32cm wide and 18cm tall. As long as you multiply by the same number, the relationship stays the same. On drawing apps, keeping this relationship when resizing is called "Maintaining Aspect Ratio".

This is 16:9 aspect ratio. It is a good ratio for our class TV.

This is 14:9 aspect ratio. It also fits our TV, but is not as wide.

Taylor Swift... or is it Sheryl Crow? This is a 4:3 ratio.
Old TVs and computer monitors used to be close to this ratio.
